Five newly appointed ministers in the Bagmati Province government took the oath of office and secrecy on Friday, giving a full shape to the Chief Minister Indra Bahadur Baniya’s Cabinet.
Province Head Deepak Prasad Devkota administered the oath at the ceremony at the provincial headquarters.
Baniya, who assumed office amid internal party tensions after successfully leading a no-confidence motion against former chief minister Bahadur Singh Lama, secured a vote of confidence in the provincial assembly on Tuesday.
He received support from both Nepali Congress and CPN-UML lawmakers, with 63 members voting in his favour, surpassing the 56 votes required for a majority in the 110-member assembly.
Following the confidence vote, Baniya coordinated with the Nepali Congress central leadership to finalise his Cabinet members.
The newly sworn-in ministers are Prabhat Kumar Tamang (Minister for Economic Affairs and Planning), Kanchan Chandra Bade (Minister for Social Development), Binu Raymajhi (Minister for Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation), Suresh Shrestha (Minister for Culture and Tourism), and Urmila KC (Minister for Youth and Sports).
In addition, Chief Minister Baniya assigned Shivraj Adhikari the portfolio of Minister for Internal Affairs and Law. Six ministers from the UML quota had already taken their oaths. With the latest appointments, Bagmati Province now has 14 ministries, including the chief minister.
Political observers note that Baniya’s vote of confidence has strengthened his political standing and given him the space to focus on governance. However, bridging internal party divisions and ensuring provincial stability remain key challenges.
